Next-Generation Training For Hospital Staff And Students Of Medicine

Limited access to live surgery is one of the main barriers to surgical training, whether it’s for qualified professionals, residents, or medical students. Logistically, it’s difficult for groups of peers or trainees to observe a qualified surgeon at work in the OR, or even view a procedure from the surgeon’s perspective.

Since the Victorian era, when the progression of surgical knowledge relied on a steady supply of cadavers, the demand for live surgical demonstrations has far outstripped supply. Until now.

The Perfect Partner For Presentation Slides

Like most education, medical training typically revolves around presentations. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just not the most engaging way of imparting medical knowledge – especially when it comes to surgical practice. It’s like learning mechanics by only reading the theory, as opposed to actually getting your hands dirty under the hood.

Of course, in the medical world – like every other academic discipline – learners need both theory and practice. But that doesn’t mean learning should be confined to presentation slides. With the Rods&Cones remote communication platform and their compact and portable hardware kits, including smart surgery glasses,  – educators working in the surgical field can now incorporate live surgery sessions into their teaching practice.

“A session with Rods&Cones really enables the next step in education where you can bring students into the OR – in a safe way – and hugely increase the potential of education. Significantly, it will make students enthusiastic about surgery, about pathology, and about making patients better.”

– Dr Jurriaan Tuynman, Colorectal Surgeon, Amsterdam’s Academic Medical Center (AMC)

A Better Way To Learn Anatomy And Pathology

Dr Jurriaan Tuynman, from Amsterdam’s Academic Medical Center (AMC) usually teaches anatomy and pathology using – you guessed it – presentation slides. But recently he’s been complementing more traditional teaching methods with a different approach – using Rods&Cones technology to share live surgery sessions.

Remote view of surgery

By connecting around 50 medical students in a lecture theater with a real operating room via

a computer and a Rods&Cones kit, Dr Tuynman has been able to deliver interactive sessions with his students whilst live surgery takes place on screen. This has enabled his students to ask questions about both anatomy and pathology, and for Dr Tuynman to give verbal explanations alongside the live footage.

This approach has also helped students to connect theoretical learning around the basics of pathology with a real and practical experience of a live surgical event – all made possible by Rods&Cones technology.

Modernizing Surgical Education

It’s clear that traditional presentation-based learning – in isolation – falls short when it comes to preparing the next generation of medical professionals. The need for a more dynamic, hands-on approach is essential to reach and engage younger generations who have grown up with on-demand video content at their fingertips.

By giving medical students an unparalleled view of open surgeries, the immersive experience of using Rods&Cones Kits transcends the limitations of traditional teaching methods. It gives students the ability to observe surgical procedures in real-time, from multiple angles, and with a level of detail that was once unimaginable. This firsthand experience cultivates a deeper understanding of anatomy, technique, and the complex dynamics between surgical teams.

Rod&Cones technology is not just facilitating a better view of the OR, it’s creating an environment where medical students can actively engage with the intricacies of surgery. Consider the benefits: enhanced comprehension, improved retention, and heightened surgical proficiency. By modernizing teaching methods, students are empowered to step into their roles with confidence, ready to make a tangible difference in the lives of their patients.

At the same time, by incorporating this advanced approach into teaching and learning, hospitals and universities can demonstrate their commitment to staying at the cutting edge of and medical education and technology. This sends a clear signal to the broader healthcare community that they’re invested in producing highly-skilled, forward-thinking medical practitioners.
